Just what is love?

One person screams out for love but cannot seem to find it. Yet someone else is offered total love and commitment but rejects it. Another has enough love to share with both the others yet cannot seem to reach either...
Is the love tween a woman and a man different from the love of family members? AND If two people are in partnership do they not consider themselves "family"?. I do not mean sexual feelings. I mean heart felt love that includes Respect, Trust, Loyalty, Compassion, Honour etc etc. The kind of love where one would lay down their life for the other person. Shouldn't this be the same for your man/woman as for your family as they would be considered your "family"?
How do we explain the difference in the love of adopted or our own children? Shouldn't these both be the same?
It hurts the same when you lose a love, so isn't it the same when you gain someone to love or someone who loves you? If this is so, then why do so many reject when love is offered? Accept even if only to the friendship level.
Love is supposed to be internal and we are supposed to find it within ourselves, we should not need validation/approval from others. If we can love ourselves we are capable of giving /receiving either family, lovers and friends.

Life is short and to me...we can never have too much love in our lives.
